<article><hdr>Airborne shot of F-94 Starfire</hdr><body>
<hi style=afpcap>Lockheed developed the F-80 into a dedicated all-weather fighter as the F-94 Starfire with a lengthened fuselage, and a new device called an afterburner. Production F-94s were assigned to All-Weather Fighter Squadrons (later Fighter Interceptor Squadrons) of Air Defense Command to defend the United States mainland as well as Alaska against a surprise attack. The delivery of the century series of interceptors enabled the F-94 to join the Air National Guard with 21 squadrons operating the Starfire before the final examples were withdrawn in 1959.</hi>
